PRESS RELEASE

"PICTURE THIS!" Something different for IWD

THE FIJI Women's Rights Movement is doing something a little different for International Women's Day this year.

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday March 8th , CEO for Women Emele Duituturaga will launch ¡Picture This!  A photography exhibit by young women.  The ¡Picture This! project aims to explore the international Women's Day theme through the eyes of these young women, who were equipped with disposable cameras from Caines Jannif Limited.

The project involved a series of two workshops. On Saturday 18th February, the young women learnt about International Women's Day and this year's theme: Women in Decision-Making: Meeting challenges, creating change.

They also learnt some basic photography skills from local photographer Adi Nacola, of Grass Skirt Photography.  The second workshop began at the crack of dawn on Saturday 25th February, when the young women met to take their pictures around Suva between 5.30am and 8.30am.  The participants picked their favourite photographs and presented them to the group, along with their caption ideas.

The most outstanding photographs have been enlarged, framed and are to be launched at a media event from 10.30am-11.30am, at the Alliance Française on Wednesday March 8th.  CEO for Women Emele Duituturaga will be chief guest at the launch. The framed photographs, which will be available for sale, will then be exhibited for three days at the Alliance Française (Wednesday 8th March to Friday 10th March).

Later, the exhibit will move to a public area such as a bank, mall or food court for a three-month display in downtown Suva.

This project has only been made possible with the generous support of our major sponsor, the New Zealand High Commission, and the support of Caines Jannif Limited and the Alliance Française.
