PRESS RELEASE: Jalal Joins Global Experts on UN Women Advisory Group
FWRM Board and founding member, Imrana Jalal, has been appointed to the UN Women’s Expert Advisory Group for it’s flagship publication, Progress of the World’s Women 2018.
Progress is produced every few years, tracks advances on gender equality around the world, and aims to re-frame critical gender and women’s rights issues for a broad audience of gender equality advocates, policymakers and academics. Previous editions of the report can be found at:
Jalal joins 7 other global experts including Pakistan's Farida Shaheed and Turkey’s Deniz Kandiyoti. The last edition of the report, Transforming economies, realizing rights, was based on 38 pieces of specially commissioned research and data analysis. There have been around 40 launches, policy influencing events and briefings to promote the report, which has so far attracted more than 1350 media articles worldwide.
The working title for the next edition of Progress is Families in a Changing World: Public Action for Women’s Rights. The report will aim to identify how policy, programming and public action can more broadly support women’s rights to resources, dignity and voice within families in a variety of contexts.
Says Board Chair Daiana Buresova on this recent development:
“We are thrilled about the recent appointment of our founding member and current FWRM governance board member Ms. Imrana Jalal to the UN Women's Expert Advisory Group for its flagship publication, Progress of the World.
UN Women will benefit immensely from her talent and extensive experience as one of the most outstanding human rights' lawyers and eminent gender experts in the Pacific region. Imrana's accomplishments speak for themselves, namely Imrana founded FWRM and she also served as a part-time Law Reform Commissioner, which saw the review and reform of the outdated Family laws that led to the current Family Law Act. The law and its impact on women and families is a matter that Imrana has made as herlife commitment to develop policy and legislative reforms that reflect their lives realities, using a human rights based approach. So her insights will add value to this international publication.”
Jalal is currently the Senior Social Development Specialist (Gender and Development) at the Asian Development Bank.
