35+ years of activism & feminism in Fiji

The Four Pillars

For more than 35 years, FWRM has campaigned, researched, lobbied, trained and developed policy and legislation in many areas that affect women’s rights.

The following four pillars form the foundations of the work we do:

Democratisation

Encompasses our work on promoting democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Fiji.

Under this pillar, FWRM works to increase meaningful engagement of young women and girls in democratisation, as well as other marginalised groups. We also work with other civil society organisations in influencing the process from a women’s human rights perspective

The following thematic areas of work are undertaken under this Pillar:

Policy, Structural and Institutional Transformation

Focused on promoting policy and legislative reforms towards the realisation of women’s human rights and transforming structures that discriminate against women and girls. This includes documenting human rights violations and lobbying to address these violations through the implementation of human rights conventions. Under this pillar, key partnerships were formed with national, regional and international organisations such as  Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN), The Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre For Women (ARROW) and others, towards the advancement of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) regionally and internationally.

Thematic areas of work under this Pillar are as follows:

Intergenerational Leadership

Intergenerational women’s leadership is a key element in counteracting discrimination and raising awareness of women’s human rights. It also contributes to strengthening Fijian and Pacific women’s movements.FWRM’s Emerging Leaders’ Forum (ELF) is a one year feminist leadership program aimed at strengthening young women’s capacity to advocate for positive change using human rights based training approaches.

The GROW. INSPIRE. RELATE. LEAD. SUCCEED-GIRLS Programme engages girls aged between 10-17 years old to increase their awareness of feminism, gender and human rights.

This pillar includes work under the following thematic areas:

Organisational Strengthening

The achievement of organisational goals are also attributed to strengthened human resource policies and processes.

FWRM continues its work as a promoter of feminism, human rights, democracy and good governance through the use of media and innovative communication technologies.
