FWRM GIRLS Programme Hosts 2nd Successful GIRLS Forum

FIFTY diverse girls between the ages of 6 and 17 years old participated in the 2nd GIRLS Forum last week in Suva, hosted by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) Grow. Inspire. Relate. Lead. Succeed - GIRLS Programme led by girls for girls.

This forum was supported by the Australian Government through GIRLS Arise, funded by the Pacific Girl programme managed by Pacific Women Lead, and the GIRLS Program, funded through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program, from 5th – 8th April, 2022.

During the opening of the four day forum, the FWRM Executive Director, Nalini Singh highlighted the importance of the 'GIRLS Lead' event as a safe space where girls’ voices drive the advocacy work  the movement is  heavily involved in.

“The work you do here goes beyond these walls and with persistent advocacy by the FWRM team and you all, we can influence laws or policies that government make”, Ms Singh said.

“I am happy to be part of an inclusive setting like this. We don’t have this opportunity often and we're just happy to be part of the space where I can build on my confidence, allowing for me to be bold and speak up on issues I want highlighted” – Mariana and Lusi, Deaf Girl participants of the forum said.

The girls interacted with speakers on topics such as leadership, girl-centered advocacy, self-sufficiency and young women in entrepreneurship.

“I enjoyed the breakout sessions we had. I liked listening to stories of leadership and I know that will help me with my leadership journey “, said Nivriti, forum participant.

Another participant, Emily, acknowledged the platform provided for the girls to be able to share their experiences. “I am happy I came here to speak up about the issues I have been struggling with. I was able to share these in the space. I know this is the right space to bring it up as I know the forum declaration will highlight this and hopefully a positive change comes out of it” – said Emily, forum participant.

A 2nd GIRLS Forum Declaration has been drafted focusing on the Ending violence against girls, Access to Education and the importance of girls’ issues around Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and will be published soon.
