NGOCHR Acknowledges Elections Process and Congratulates New Coalition Government

The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) wishes to congratulate the new government-in-waiting, the coalition of parties and candidates chosen by Fijians to lead us for the next four years.

The Coalition acknowledges the upholding of democratic processes that have allowed the space for the parties to have discussions and make decisions moving forward without fear and intimidation, despite the obvious challenges. We are hopeful that this sets a trend of responsible and healthy debates amongst our newly chosen leaders and look forward to working with them to ensure the safeguarding of the well-being and the rights of all Fijians.

On the same note, we are also urging the current caretaker leadership administration to ensure a smooth transition and transfer of power to Fiji's next Government, and that the results of the election and the wishes of the Fijian people, are genuinely respected. Our political history is tainted with overthrowing democratically elected governments and military coups, and it is high time the narrative is changed.

The Coalition urges all Fijians to remain calm and respect the results of the electoral process as we await the swearing in of our newly elected members of Parliament.

We remind us all of the rule of law and the protection of the values on which our country is founded - democracy, freedom, equality and respect for human rights. Let's move forward Fiji!
